在即将到来的独立日假期，卫生专家提醒公众在下水前需提高警惕。一种曾主要在墨西哥湾沿岸发现的、可能致命的细菌，如今已在更北方的水域出现，其中包括纽约长岛的多处水道。对于患有特定健康状况的人群，甚至是一个小伤口，一旦感染，病情可能迅速恶化至危及生命。
今年春天，研究人员在长岛的多个水道中检测到了这种细菌，汉普顿地区官员也因此发布了相关警报。此次警告发出之际，据《太阳先驱报》报道，密西西比州南部一名男子因严重的弧菌感染而住院。恩康帕斯健康中心的卡洛斯·阿里亚斯医生指出：“这几乎是一种危及生命的感染，同时也是一种外科和内科的紧急状况。”
根据美国疾病控制与预防中心（CDC）的数据，约有五分之一的弧菌感染者会死亡，有时在出现症状的一到两天内即发生。
